Each Direct TV Receivers receives its own signal from the seperate line which allows you to be able to watch a different program on each receiver.

Most of your newer equipment require a dual RG6 coax cable (DVR) how ever there most connections have 2 lines from the satellite that run to a multi switch wich can power more than 2 receivers there is a 13v and 18v output on the multi switch.
