Charge For a defective Direct TV Remote.

I called Direct TV today to complaint about my remote which is not working well.It is the first time to happen since i start to have a Direct TV for almost 4 years.
This remote was more than a year old when they installed my second receiver (HD).The problem with the remote is its working on the volume but not on the guide button.
It has a message on the right buttom screen saying your remote was not program on the receiver only on the TV.
I found out the lever selector for AV1,AV2 and TV was broken. I had never drop nor soak in water.
The issue here is the poor quality of a remote i have nor its not my fault; but sad to say they charge me for $15 for replacing the remote or having a protection plan for $5.99/month.
Which I found it so rediculous, I already paying more than $100/mo for the subscription... No way of adding for the protection plan.
And no way for paying $15 for a new remote!
Terrence Comment: Hi Richard, thanks for posting your comment to share with all of us :)
As far as I know, Direct TV monthly charges will only be include for the subscription service itself, not the equipment.
Any of your direct TV equipment with you, from dish, receiver, remote control, cable..everything will be at your cost :)
Direct TV strategy is:" I ll provide you the equipment, let you use them for free with no rental charges since you are signing a 2 year contract with me.
But if any of them no longer working, you will need to pay the replacement cost"
In short, the new remote you pay for at $15 will still belong to Direct TV. If you cancel their service, Direct TV will take them back.
That why there are many Direct TV subscribers prefer to buy their own set of Direct TV Equipment instead of use Direct TV Equipment for free...
But if we look the situation from the other angle, if you buy your own Direct TV Equipment yourself, you are coming with the equipment cost upfront yourself.. and you still need to replace them if any of them went wrong.. ( which is not good from cash flow point of view, come out money up front )
But of course, you can ensure that all your direct tv equipment is new product if you buy yourself. If you use the equipment that provide by Direct TV, you may get the old equipment which had recycle for many many hands, which expose to higher risk of damaged compare to the new equipment you buy yourself..
Which is better? Buy new equipment yourself or use free equipment from direct tv and see your luck? You will need to justify by yourself :)
Why direct TV do not want to include the equipment cost in their subscription? Well.. the subscription cost will be even higher which frightened most of their customers away :)
The subscription cost is too expensive then? Haha, The major satellite tv provider in United States nowadays is only Direct TV and Dish Network.. and both of them provide similar offer... very sad to say that it is in a either take it or leave it scenario..
Anyway, Thanks for your sharing :)
