Direct TV offer both standard programming and HD Programming to their customers. If you are taking their HD programming, then some of the channels that available in HD ( High definition ) will get super crystal clear picture and come with digital surround sound of 5.1

HD Channels and standard channels will be share the same channel numbers; it is just that if you take HD package then you will be able to view that HD channels in HD effects, or else, you will just able to to view it as standard TV channels.

If you are taking their HD package, you will be charge at additional USD 10.00 / month if you take their family choice package on top of your monthly channel subscription fees.

But, if you are taking their premium package such as Family Choice Xtra, Family Choice Ultimate or Premier package, and you are taking their auto billing plan, then Direct TV willing to waive this USD 10.00 / month HD programming fees for you.

If you take any of these package and do not enrolled into their auto billing plan, then you will still need to pay for this USD 10.00 / month..

Once you are taking their HD programming, then they will send you the Direct TV HDTV Receivers that able to view HD programming, and the LNB 5 dish that special design for received HD satellite signals.

Please note that all these equipment is lease to you, not give to you, you will need to pay for the repair cost or replacement cost if any of them have technical problems.

But the good news is, you can reduce the equipment breakdown cost by taking their Direct TV Equipment Protection Plan here

Please note that you will need to own a set of HDTV ( High definition television )( purchase separately ) in order to view HD programming.

And I think it is must to have the home theater system ( purchased separately ) if you plan to get your HD programming, or else you are unable to enjoy the 5.1 surround sound effects even though you had paid for your HD programming.

I suggest you to consider the Pioneer brand as few of my friends had purchase different model of home theater system from them and the sound effect is very good :)
