Direct TV Scam

I been with Direct TV for years now. I recently received a free upgrade to Direct TV HD DVR a few months ago (about 2-3 months).
The price they offered me is not what I was paying. My bill went from being under $90 a month to well over $100 closer to $200.
I decided to try Verizon FiOs since for less than $100 I could get HD DVR and home internet. I called Direct TV to cancel my account and the representative got rude and didn't want to be helpful after I told them I had Verizon.
Then he said I was going to be charged the $377 dollars because I would be breaking a two year contract. I told him I didn't know I had a two year contract.
I was given a free upgrade but he didn't care. He said I had to pay it and refused to give me more info, he just kept repeating the above information.
I called today and the representatives were rude and so was the manager. The manager told me they all agreed that i have to pay that bill even though I told them i was unaware of a contract and it was a free upgrade.
They didn't care. I feel they were rude and unhelpful because they know they can get away with stuff like this. No one will help us customers out, especially not the BBB which is a joke.
I hope people out there be careful with Direct TV. I was with Direct TV since 2001 and will not be returning. I will be disputing this with the Direct TV main office but they already told me it is non-disputable- go figure.
They know exactly what they are doing to customers and I see from reading these complaints that I am not the only victim.
Something needs to happen- but what? How? That's the problem. Does anyone know how we can get Direct TV to stop doing this to their customers?
If you have the power to do so (since I and obviously many others don't), please do something.
