Enquiry on Direct TV Protection

I signed up with Direct TV yesterday. I was asked to give information so they could check my credit rating. They asked me for my social security number which I gave. I was told today by my attorney that I should never ever give my social security number out over the phone to anyone. How can I be assured that this company will protect this information?
