Fed up with Direct TV!

At 93+ years of age, my mother is moving to an assisted living home on 13/7/10. When I called to cancel her Direct TV accoount, I was told she still owed for 6 more months of service.
She was set up with a 24 month contract, when she has never owned a HDTV in her life. It should have been an 18 month contract. What am I to do?
