Why won't my Direct TV receiver work w/ splitter?

I have 1 HDMI input on my TV, I bought a splitter with 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. It wasn't powered. I connected my Direct TV receiver to one input and my PS3 to the other one. My Direct TV receiver worked, as long as my PS3 was on, once my PS3 is off, the Direct TV receiver didn't work. I then bought a powered splitter, thinking this would take care of the situation. The Direct TV receiver wouldn't work at all even with the PS3 on. Why is this, and what can I do? Thank you
